The commission
A media console has a hard job: corral a tangle of electronics and cables while still earning its place in a nice room. We built this one long and low from solid cherry, with four hand-caned doors that let infrared remotes pass through and let heat escape. No fans, no vents cut into the back, just an honest material doing the work.
Behind the doors, adjustable shelves and a removable back panel make it easy to swap components and route cables to a hidden power strip. The cherry is finished to warm and deepen with sunlight, so the piece will grow richer where the light hits it. Solid brass pulls, left unlacquered, will develop their own patina alongside the wood. The case is joined with dovetails at the corners and a dust panel between each bay. That is furniture-grade construction on a piece most makers would build like a box. It disappears into the room until you look closely.
It swallowed all our gear and somehow made the whole room feel calmer.Priya R., Tacoma
